Smyrna resident Hunter Hill is the third Republican to toss his hat in the ring for the newly redrawn state Senate District 6, which now incorporates parts of Buckhead and Sandy Springs.

Hill ran against incumbent Doug Stoner, D-Smyrna, in 2008, garnering 39.4 percent of the vote.

“We had a lot of support out of Vinings and Smyrna and some out of Mableton,” said the decorated Army captain.

He completed three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan beginning in 2002. Hill said he is optimistic because the precincts he carried remained in District 6 after this summer’s redistricting process, in which the district shifted north and east.
As to the newly added sections of the district, Hill, a Westminster graduate, Buckhead Baseball and NYO football alum, said he is tuned in to the needs of the area.

“Most of my life has been in Buckhead, Vinings and Smyrna,” he said.

However, it was time spent away from the Northside that most influences his decision making, Hill said.

“I want to run because I got to spend some time overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq and it gave me great perspective on the values and principals of our country,” said Hill, a West Point graduate. “Those are values and principals I want to preserve.”

He said he will campaign to eliminate regulations, simplify the tax code, improve public schools and decrease congestion.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to serve again,” he said. “I think we need leaders with business and military experience to lead from the front in our state Senate.”

After his retirement from the Army, Hill, 34, began his business career in real estate, and is currently director of security for SecurAmerica. He and his wife Shannan are the parents of Hunter Bradley Hill Jr. and are expecting their second child in December.

Jon Gillooly

Marietta Daily Journal Staff Writer

Published: September 25, 2008

VININGS – Army Capt. Hunter Hill, 31, of Vinings, said his message of being a good steward of tax dollars, natural resources, and children’s future is resonating with the people he meets as he campaigns for the state senate.
He is challenging incumbent Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) to represent the sixth district.

Hill’s top priority is improving public education.

“Georgia’s spending per student grew faster than all but one state from 1984 to 2004 with little results to show for it, so it is clear that money is not the solution. North Carolina and Florida have similar demographics to Georgia but spend less, and have much better academic results,” Hill said.

Hill said he looks forward to working with the state school board “to create a testing and assessment system capable of measuring student progress; of creating a teacher pay scale based partially on results of increased student progress; of expanding school choice; and creating a funding program that is student-centered, transparent and encourages flexibility.”

Hill is also campaigning for a cap on gasoline taxes.

“The government should not make a windfall profit on the backs of taxpayers. In these tough economic times, the government should cut back on its gas-tax revenue to help lower the price of gas,” he said.

Auditing government programs is another goal.

“Cutting government waste is and always should be a priority for a legislator. Working to cut excess and unnecessary spending is vital in these down economic times,” he said.

Hill is a native of Vinings. He attended The Westminster Schools and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He was deployed to Afghanistan in January 2002 with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, and later served in Iraq. In 2006, he was deployed to train the Afghanistan National Police, he said.

He now works for Carter Real Estate in Atlanta, developing schools.

Hill is seeking office, he said, because “we need someone who will not only be there to represent the people of Vinings, Smyrna and Mableton, but who will vote for what is best for our children.”

He believes he has a good chance of victory.

“If voters look at each candidate and our policy proposals, records of achievement, leadership and service, then I think we will be in a very good position. This job is about representing the taxpayers, and if the voters base their decision on who will provide them with the most fiscally conservative and accountable service, then we should win.
“We are running our campaign based on a strong faith in the voters being well-informed, so we are optimistic,” Hill said.

I am pleased to share some exciting news with you. As you may know, I ran for Georgia’s State Senate in 2008. As a result of the recent 2010 Census, the lines of District 6 have been redrawn and now include Smyrna, Vinings, Buckhead, Brookhaven and Sandy Springs. After prayerful consideration, encouragement from many, and a personal passion to serve in a capacity to protect our freedoms and our future, I am announcing my candidacy for this seat once again.

Why am I running?

During my time as an Officer in the US Army, I had the privilege of serving our country on three tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. In Afghanistan especially, I saw a country without an understanding of America’s values and principles. Concurrently, I observed, in America, that many of our own politicians were undermining the very principles that made us the envy of the world. I truly believe that our greatest threats are not from abroad, but from within. I see my future service as a State Senator to be a continuation of the oath I took as an officer to support and defend the Constitution, and I am convinced that we must elect statesmen, at all levels of government, who will fight for and protect our founding principles.

Our Founders understood that government does not cause people to flourish, but can only create an environment that allows people to flourish. There is a big difference. As our State Senator, I will support and defend our Founding principles: limited government, individual responsibility, low (and fair) taxation, free-market capitalism, and a sound legal system. These values and principles motivated me to attend West Point and serve our country in the Army. Now, I have the burning desire to protect these principles and serve our community in the State Senate.

Throughout this campaign, I will be issuing the specifics of my platform, but because this will be a competitive race, I will need your support immediately to help spread the word and win this race. Please consider visiting www.votehunterhill.com to make a contribution, and to follow our campaign over the coming months.

Thank you for your consideration, and please call me at (404) 414-1891, if you have any questions or would like more information about my plan to serve in the State Senate. I would be honored to hear from you.

Hunter Hill has decided to enter the race for the newly drawn 6th Senate district. The 2012 maps for this race place incumbent Democrat Doug Stoner into one of the most vulnerable districts for Democrats in the upcoming elections. The new lines of the district, including many wealthy areas of both Cobb County and Fulton’s Buckhead neighborhood, ensure that this is likely to be the most expensive State Senate race in Georgia history.

In addition to Stoner, Hill is expected to face Republicans Josh Belinfante and Beth Beskin who have announced candidacies, as well as others. Hill’s full press release is below the fold.

Atlanta native Hunter Hill today announced his campaign for Georgia’s 6th State Senate District. Hill, 34, is a Republican and decorated Army Captain having served in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The newly drawn 6th District stretches from Vinings through Buckhead and into Sandy Springs. The district is currently represented by Democrat Doug Stoner.

“After many prayers and discussions with my family and friends, and encouragement from many throughout our community, I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Georgia State Senate,” Hill said. “I look forward to bringing principled leadership and a true desire to serve our community to the legislature.”

Hill, a resident of Smyrna, ran against Stoner in 2008, and defeated him in the Vinings and Smyrna precincts that remain in the new district. Hill graduated from Westminster where he is a member of the Hall of Fame for football and baseball. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Management and Civil Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point. During his time at West Point, Hill played quarterback and returned punts for the football team and served as the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. While in the Army, Hill received two Army Commendation Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal and two Bronze Stars for his service during three tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“During my career as an Army officer, I had the privilege of serving our country in Afghanistan and Iraq. Through this experience, I realized that the values and principles that made America the greatest country in the world need to be protected now more than ever,” said Hill. “I want to continue my service to protect and defend our constitution as a State Senator, representing the people of the 6th District.”

After his retirement from the Army, Hill began his business career in real estate, and is currently the Director of Security for SecurAmerica. He is married to the former Shannan Reese of Atlanta. The Hills are the proud parents of Hunter Bradley Hill, Junior, and are expecting their second child in December. The Hills attend Church of the Apostles in Buckhead.
